VALPARAISO | A Valparaiso man made up a story about being robbed hoping to avoid paying a relative money he owed, according to Valparaiso police.
Ted Russell, 33, of 414 Glandale Blvd., called police at 3:30 p.m. Sunday telling them he had been robbed in the 300 block of West Street.
Russell told police he was walking from his home to Burger King at 555 W. Morthland Drive (U.S. 30) to meet relatives for a birthday party.
He told police two young men got out of vehicle, one of them pointed a gun at him, and demanded money.
Police said they searched the area, but could not find the men.
According to police, as officers continued to question the man they discovered inconsistencies in his story.
He eventually told police the incident did not happen, but wanted an excuse so that he would not have to pay back the money owed to his relative.
Russell was arrested and charged with false informing, a misdemeanor.
