CENTER TOWNSHIP | A 21-year-old woman was arrested after police said she drove her car into a creek while intoxicated.
A Porter County sheriff's officer spotted a speeding car about 12:05 a.m. Wednesday on Ind. 2 near County Road 100 West.
The officer said he activated his lights and siren as the car continued westbound and the driver, Genille Richmond, 21, of Center Township, allegedly increased her speed.
Police said the woman headed west on Aberdeen Drive, running over the center median as she entered the Aberdeen subdivision. The officer following her then clipped the subdivision entrance sign, causing minor damage to his squad car.
The officer said as he was catching up, the car ran off the roadway, down an embankment and into a creek.
When he reached the car, he said the driver was gone. Officers then began searching the area and discovered Richmond returned to the car and was reportedly attempting to drive it out of the knee-deep creek.
The woman told police she was headed home after running to the gas station, then said she was at a family gathering earlier in the day and had a "Jamaican Me Crazy" mixed drink.
Police said Richmond failed a series of field sobriety tests and was reportedly found with a 0.13 blood alcohol content.
She was arrested and taken to Porter County Jail. Police said she faces likely drunken driving and resisting law enforcement charges.
