LIBERTY TOWNSHIP | Porter Regional Hospital will partner with Loyola University Health System to expand access to academic research and clinical care.

The announcement was made at a joint press conference Monday at Porter Regional Hospital. The agreement was struck about a month ago and has been in the works for over a year.

"This is another step in Porter Regional Hospital expanding our regional presence," Porter Health Care System CEO Jonathan Nalli said.

What this means for patients, Nalli said, is when a second opinion is necessary, Porter will call on the physicians at Loyola to assist on cases. While there have been relationships of this type previously, the agreement improves access to Loyola physicians, opens better communication and provides better patient care.

"Porter Regional Hospital has access to all of Loyola's medical staff," Nalli said, adding two initial programs will include oncology care and neurological sciences.

Dr. David Hecht, senior vice president of clinical affairs and chief medical officer for Loyola, said Loyola and Porter physicians can team to look at patient records and conduct examinations, using technology, to diagnose or to work with patients to formulate a better treatment plan.

"We hope to connect into your services and to provide expertise to your doctors here. It is relationship building," Hecht said.

Hecht said the partnership will also increase the number of clinical trials available to local patients.

"There are hundreds of them and those trials can be done right here," Hecht said. He said a study nurse will be located at Porter's main campus.

Hecht said Loyola physician presence at Porter will be determined as the partnership between Porter and Loyola progresses.
