Porter County Expo Boat Show keeps motoring
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP | They can't wait to get out on the waves.
But because some of the waves are frozen, boat lovers and those who dream of owning one had to make do Saturday by admiring all the big toys on display at the 14th annual Porter County Expo Boat Show.
The event, which showcased speed, pontoon, deck, runabout and fishing boats from five area dealers, is a bit smaller this year, said Bob Gross, who coordinates the show.
"Because of the economy, some of the dealers didn't want to come," said Gross, of Pinecrest Marina in Cedar Lake. "There's still no place else you can go to see boats and get ideas from some of the area's most reputable dealers all in one place."
Gross said he expected about 2,000 visitors to attend the show and get price quotes on boats with names like Hurricane, Aqua Patio, Sweetwater and ProAngler. Also on hand were dock and pier vendors, a wetland biologist and the United States Coast Guard.
"We wanted the show to go on, and we will continue to hold it every year," Gross said. "As the economy improves, we'll get bigger again."
Although they admired the shiny new boats on display, Fred and Kim Deutsch, and son Kyle, 15, already own a 34-foot Sea Ray, where they live from April 1 through Nov. 1.
"It's relaxing, enjoyable family time," said Fred Deutsch, of Lowell. "Marina life makes it fun."
Kyle even has his own cabin, complete with TV and Xbox, and has plenty of company with other marina kids, who "go from boat to boat."
"There's never a dull moment," Kyle Deutsch said. "There's always something to do."
Kim Deutsch said she "has it down to a science" and is anxious for winter to be over.
"We have 64 days ... I can't wait," she said. "We're ready for it. Doing this makes it seem closer."
The show continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Porter County Expo Center, 215 E. Division Road. Parking and admission are free.
