VALPARAISO │ Porter County Sheriff’s Department officers armed with Christmas trees went knocking on doors Sunday afternoon.

It was part of the third annual Porter County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 165 Cops and Christmas Trees event to support families in need in Porter County.

About 25 pre-lighted Christmas trees from Walmart were delivered by Sheriff’s Department, representatives from multiple law enforcement agencies and FOP associate members and retired officers.

Indiana State Trooper Dave “Trooper Stumpy” Miller is getting close to retirement after serving Porter County for 32 years. This was his first time delivering trees to families.

“It’s getting close to the end of my career, and this is a way to start giving back to the community that has supported me all these years,” he said.

Porter County Sheriff’s Sgt. Larry LaFlower has participated every year and said it’s nice to help the needy families at Christmas.

“Especially the ones who have kids who are really touched when they see us deliver the trees and ornaments,” he said.

South Haven resident Viveca Spivey and her young son answered their door to welcome their new tree from officers, including FOP Lodge President Gary Gear.

"I’m not working a lot of hours now because I’m in college,” she said. “I appreciate them helping me and my family out.”

A few blocks away, resident Amber Sprague was happy to have her tree.

“I like it, it’s good,” she said. “I didn’t know they did things like this.”

Gear said the lodge had help in finding the families in need from the Red Cross.

“It’s just the right thing to do,” he said. “We know there are families out there who need this.”
