Ride for the Paws

Leroy's Hot Stuff will sponsor a Ride for the Paws benefit ride and party to benefit the Humane society Calumet Area and Best Buddies Pen Pantry at 333 W. U.S. 20. Tickets are $15 or $20 for double. Sign ups begin at 11 a.m. with last bike out at 1. Call (219) 628-2806.

VALPARAISO | Porter County residents are invited to a presentation on how SMART 911 can help responders better serve in an emergency. The presentation is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Campbell Street Cafe, 4245 Meridian Woods Drive. Pines Village Retirement Communities is hosting this program, presented by Jill Pfister. Chicken fundraiser | Pines Village Retirement Communities will host a Nelson's Port-Pit chicken and pork chop fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Staples parking lot, 2106 Morthland Drive. All proceeds will benefit Village Park Enrichment Center for future programs. A half-chicken or pork chop will be sold for $6 and orders of pit-tatoes will be $3. ICS annual used book sale

CHESTERTON | The Independent Cat Society, a no kill animal shelter in Westville, will hold its annual used book sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and again from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 20 at American Legion hall, 798 Wabash Ave. ICS cats and kittens available for adoption will be on site. Used book collection

VALPARAISO | The Iota Chapter of Kappa Kappa Kappa, Inc. will hold its used book collection in preparation for the annual book sale.
