UNION TOWNSHIP | Four days after Colin Mosley's first birthday his family found out he had leukemia. Now 3-1/2 years old, he is having complications from the bone marrow transplant he received in 2010.
Colin's parents, Dawn and Brian Mosley, of Union Township, are confident that he will get better.
"He is having thyroid and liver problems, with his GI tract," said Dawn Mosley. "He's having complications because the donor was 39 and the age difference can be a problem. He is resistant to everything."
Colin and his mom go to the University of Chicago several times a week because of all the complications.
Colin weighs 18 pounds and is delayed in everything, including his speech. He can say only about nine or 10 words.
"He crawls, but not very well and he eats very little," said his mom. "We have to feed him through an IV at night to help maintain his weight."
"The costs of all this is amazing and the driving back and forth and parking fees are incredible," said Mosley.
But to help with the financial burden the family faces, Union Township Middle School is sponsorship a read-a-thon for Colin starting today through March 7. All proceeds will benefit Colin.
"We have been blessed with insurance but many of the chemos we are using aren't covered by the insurance," said Mosley.
Mosley can't work because she has to take her son to and from the hospital so often. They also have a preschooler at home, Savannah.
"I was shocked and happy when I heard what the school is doing for us," said Mosley. "I went to school there. This is great."
Mallori Lucas, a parent of a Union Township student, is in charge of the read-a-thon and said that anyone can get involved and help with the fundraiser.
"The children got letters about the read-a-thon and their parents have been notified," said Lucas. "The public can also help by dropping off donations at the school or signing up with a student who is part of the readathon. There is also a fund set up through Centier Bank."
