VALPARAISO | Bernice, 82, has a lot of shoulder, knee and leg pain, much of it due to arthritis. A recliner would help her be more comfortable when she is in her living room. The Christmas for the Elderly program will help make her wish come true.

The Visiting Nurse Association and The Times Media Co. jointly sponsor the charity, which has raised more than $630,000 in the past 26 years. This money helps improve quality of lives for Porter County residents. Last year, 532 donors gave more than $46,000 to provide equipment and help to seniors.

"I walk all the time," she said. "But the chair is where I rest. I try to stay active."

Bernice likes to sing and is part of the Young at Heart Singers with the Banta Center.

"I love music and I love Christmas carols," she said.

She had been receiving help through the VNA but is doing better every day.

"I still don't have the energy I used to have," she said. "But this chair would sure make a change in my life."

The VNA is accepting donations to help Bernice and others who need assistance. The Times will publish profiles in Porter County editions about seniors who benefit from the community's financial support.

The VNA is a nonprofit home health agency licensed by the state.
