VALPARAISO | A large banner with the words “Welcome to your new Patient-Centered Medical Home” greeted those attending the HealthLinc open house Sunday.

The clinic, which provides affordable health care for people of all ages, has relocated to a new building at 1001 Sturdy Road, thanks to a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

It will open to patients July 8.

The open house offered an opportunity for residents to tour the building, and included a free barbecue lunch, scavenger hunt, magician show and Zumba demonstration.

HealthLinc CEO Beth Wrobel said the 22,000-square-foot building is three times larger than HealthLinc's former facility at 454 S. College Ave. and features 27 patient exam rooms, 12 dental chairs and a community center.

Wrobel said the number of patients using the clinic grew from 997 in 2006 to almost 5,600 in 2012. The new building is expected to accommodate an additional 6,000 patients, she said.

HealthLinc provides primary and preventive medical, dental and behavioral health services; health and wellness education; chronic disease management; women’s and men’s health services and wellness checks and immunizations. Fagen Pharmacy is on-site, and optometry services will be added in August.

“It's really a one-stop shop,” Wrobel said. “If somebody doesn't have a medical home, we want to be their home.”

Hobart resident April Green and her son, Jordan, 5, were among those touring the facility. Green said Jordan had been a patient at the clinic's former building.

“This is amazing, there's so much more space here,” she said.

Green's daughter, Nikkie Tuzinski, is a medical assistant at HealthLinc, and joins a staff of physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners, hygienists, psychiatrists and social workers.

Staff will grow from about 40 to 63 over the next year to serve the increased number of patients, Wrobel said.

Valparaiso resident Anne Chambers said she used HealthLinc at its former location and was impressed with the new optometry services the clinic will offer.

“I just had that done, and I wish I would have waited,” she said.
