UNION TOWNSHIP | A Union Township man, frustrated by a second burglary at his home since 2009, is offering a reward to the person who can bring the thieves to justice.

Burglars hit the Union Township home of James McDaniel on Feb. 21.

McDaniel said and he his wife returned to their home in the 600 West block of County Road 300 North that evening, after going out for dinner, they found a door leading from the garage into the house was open.

According to police, he went inside and found items on the floor and a television moved.

He discovered his front door was forced open. The deadbolt still was in the locked position, causing damage to the door frame and drywall.

Police said the bedrooms had been ransacked. A 38-inch television and gold watch were taken. Also missing were two shotguns, a rifle, a 410-45 Long Colt, two handguns, three types of prescription medication, several types of ammunition and a large amount of cash.

McDaniel said police found few clues, so he is offering a $1,000 reward, hoping someone will come forward with information that will help police put the burglars behind bars and hopefully recover some of his property.

McDaniel said a large safe was taken, an item too heavy for one person to carry alone, and too large to fit in the trunk of a car. He believes the burglars knew what they were looking for and where to look in his home.

"Unfortunately, I think it's someone who knows me," he said. "I probably will have a connection with them, and that’s even sadder to think."

McDaniel said in March 2009 someone broke into his home and stole six handguns.

Anyone with information about the burglary should call the Porter County Sheriff's Department Detective Bureau at (219) 477-3130. Anonymous tips can be called in to the WeTip hotline at (800) 78-CRIME.
