The winner of a Saturday spelling bee, sponsored by Kankakee Valley REMC, will walk away with a trip of a lifetime to Washington, D.C., to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The final competition will take place at 10 a.m. at Wheeler High School auditorium, 599 W. 300 North, Valparaiso.
The top 10 winners from the Lake/Porter County District Spelling Bee and the top nine winners from the LaPorte Spelling Bee will be in competition for the top prize. The winner will receive an all-expense-paid trip for themselves and one parent to attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the nation's capital.
First-, second- and third-place finishers also will receive prizes from Scripps, Merriam-Webster, a cash prize from Kankakee Valley REMC and trophies.
This spelling bee is a part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee program, which is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational promotion, administered on a not-for-profit basis by the E.W. Scripps Co. and local sponsors.
Kankakee Valley REMC is an electric utility cooperative serving more than 18,000 customers throughout portions of Lake, Porter, Starke, St. Joseph, Pulaski, Marshall and LaPorte counties.
