UNION TOWNSHIP | Four people, including two students, were sent to local hospitals Thursday after a school bus and an SUV collided, officials said.
Union Fire Rescue officials were called about 3:30 p.m. to help students, a bus driver and the driver of an SUV at 197 N. 500 West, said Assistant Fire Chief Timothy Beach.
Two students and both drivers were sent to local hospitals with minor injuries, he said.
A 65-year-old Valparaiso woman was ticketed by Porter County Sheriff's Department, police spokesman Sgt. Larry LaFlower said.
Tara Kalamir was issued the citation for driving left of center and was taken to the hospital for lacerations to her face, he said in a news release.
The bus driver, Tracy Gallagher, 38, of Valparaiso, went to a local hospital for pain to her wrists, the release states.
There were about 17 students on the bus who were checked by medical personnel after the crash, officials said.
Two girls, ages 9 and 10, were taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart for neck pain, the release states.
The crash caused a gas leak in the SUV, which fire officials handled.
The bus was coming from the Union Center Elementary School, Beach said.
More than five fire and emergency ambulance services responded to the crash to tend to the students who were riding the bus.
Representatives of the Union Township School Corp. did not immediately return a call for comment.
