JEFFERSONVILLE | Valparaiso Community Schools Superintendent Andrew Melin says he will be leaving the area before next month.
The Greater Clark County Schools board voted to hire Melin on Monday night.
“I appreciate the opportunity that has been provided here,” he said. “Obviously though, it's met with mixed emotions.”
Melin said leaving the Valparaiso staff and community will be difficult but he's leaving with a sense of pride.
“I'm very proud of our staff for overcoming the adversity we have experienced this year,” he said.
The district was forced to make deep cuts in staffing and expenditures to make up a $3 million budget deficit.
“They continued to put students first and I think that's what I'm most proud of,” he said.
Clark County offered Melin $170,000 annual salary, a $20,000 moving stipend and $10,000 retirement annuity. The board also gave him a $5,000 per year vehicle allowance.
He will start downstate on July 1.
Clark County is on the Kentucky and Indiana state line. Melin said he looks forward to working a diverse area noting the district has both rural and urban areas as well as small towns throughout the area mixed with suburban communities that settled north of Louisville.
“It's really neat to be that close to a larger city,” he said. “It still has that small town feel to it. It's sort of like the best of all worlds.”
