VALPARAISO | Taltree’s Children’s Adventure Garden will open rain or shine on April 1. Plants have been started, housing for worms is under construction, and new features like musical instruments, a rain chain and a windmill are being gathered for installation.
The Children’s Adventure Garden is about interaction. Kids will be drawn into a world where houses are made from sunflowers, willow branches form passageways, and uniquely-shaped gourds hang from a tunnel leading to a shed with a roof made of plants. A series of vegetable growing beds, compost bins, a worm farm and chicken house will teach concepts such as “seed to table,” the three R’s of recycling (how to reuse, recycle and reduce), and how all living systems are interdependent. New additions this season include an A to Z Plant Walk, showcasing plants whose names correspond with each letter of the alphabet, and a Music Garden, featuring melodies made from instruments crafted from nature and propelled by the wind.
The garden will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. April through October. Admission is free to members, $5 for ages 5 to 12, $10 ages 13 to 17 and adults, $8 for ages 55 and older, college students and military.
