VALPARAISO | A 16-year-old boy was seriously injured early Saturday when he rode his bike into the path of semi on U.S. 30.

Police found the boy lying in the grassy median of U.S. 30 at Comeford Road about 3:50 a.m.

The driver of the semi told police he was eastbound on U.S. 30 when the boy "rolled" in front of his semi and was struck by the front corner of the tractor.

The boy told police he was riding his bike home from Walmart with his friends and didn't see the truck.

Officers learned the boy had been drinking before the crash, police said. He registered a blood alcohol content of 0.111 percent, police said.

The boy was taken to Porter Regional Hospital and later transferred to a hospital in South Bend with a broken pelvis, broken tail bone, broken leg and scrapes and bruises over his entire body, police said.

Police are pursuing charges of minor consumption of alcohol against the boy.
