Colonel saluted at service

VALPARAISO | The South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail honors Valparaiso Civil War Col. Isaac Suman at 11 a.m. with the placement of a special commemorative marker at his Maplewood Cemetery grave site in a New Year’s Eve ceremony.

Suman, who commanded the 9th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War, survived gunshot wounds 150 years ago today in the famed Battle of Stones River in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The battle was among the Civil War’s bloodiest. Suman returned home at the end of the war and served for a time as Valparaiso’s mayor.

A granite marker honoring Suman for his war-time sacrifices will be placed at the foot of the colonel’s existing headstone. A Civil War artillery re-enactment group will be on hand to fire a cannon in his honor, and historical preservation volunteers will drink a non-alcoholic toast at graveside. The cemetery is at the intersection of Sturdy Road and Penna Hill Drive, just south of U.S. 30 in Valparaiso.
