VALPARAISO | The second annual Great Futures Family Bike Ride will be May 11. Hundreds of riders from across the region participate in this celebration of quality family time and healthy living.

Hosted by Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County, the Great Futures Family Bike Ride is a noncompetitive ride for all ages on the family-friendly Prairie-Duneland Trail. Families can choose the distance that best suits them. Some may choose to ride a couple of miles. Others may choose to ride the 18-mile round trip. Refreshment and water stations, maps and rest areas will be available at four points along the trail between Portage and Chesterton.

Families can check in at two locations. Main stage activities will take place at Countryside Park, 5250 U.S. 6, Portage. Main stage activities include free bike safety inspections and helmet fittings by Leo’s Mobile Bike Service, appearances by local mascots and more.

Riders also can check-in at the Duneland Trailhead, 108 S. 15th St. in Chesterton. Free bike safety inspections and helmet fittings by Chesterton Bicycle Station will be available. Check in begins at 7:30 a.m., and the ride begins at 8:30 at both locations.

“I rode the entire 18 miles with my dad and I was only 8 years old," ,” said Bailey Ranta, member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County-South Haven Unit. "We stopped a few times and had fruit and water along the way so we could rest. I plan on riding the entire course again this year with my friends," she said. "I cannot wait because I want to prove to my friends that I can do it again this year.”

Riders can register online at www.bgcpoco.org through April 26. The cost to participate is $7 per person for ages 5 and older. A commemorative T-shirt is included in the fee for the first 300 registered participants. Children ages 5 and younger are free, however a participation waiver must be signed by a parent/guardian at the event. T-shirts are not available for children 5 and younger.

Proceeds from the Great Futures Family Bike Ride support the youth development programs and activities of Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County.
