VALPARAISO | Students from Thomas Jefferson Middle School in Valparaiso competed against teams from across the country in Saturday's Science Olympiad National Tournament.

The event took place at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Thomas Jefferson students moved on to the national tournament in March after winning at the state competition at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Thomas Jefferson placed 19th out of 60 teams at the national tournament.

National medal winners from the TJMS team included Megan Rahn and Luke Sanders, who placed second in the Boomilever event; Tim Henderson, Nick Bluhm and Allison Skadberg, who place third in the Mission Possible event; Abby Mitchell and Joey Lavalley who placed fourth in the Mousetrap Vehicle event; and Lavalley and Melissa Piper, who placed fifth in the Reach for the Stars event.

Saturday's competition marked the 24th time Thomas Jefferson students have competed at the national level.

Thomas Jefferson teams won the national tournament in 1993 and 1996 and have been state champions 21 times.
