BLOOMINGTON | Two region schools are heading to the national Science Olympiad competition following success at Saturday's state tournament at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Valparaiso's Thomas Jefferson Middle School and Munster High School each took first place in the middle and high school divisions, Thomas Jefferson coach Richard Bender said.

He said Stanley Clark Middle School, of Mishawaka, and Bloomington High School North also move on to the national tournament, which takes place May 17 and 18 at Wright State University in Ohio. Those two teams took second place in their respective divisions.

Other Northwest Indiana schools had success in Saturday's tournament.

Bender said Munster's Wilbur Wright Middle School placed third in the middle school division and Chesterton Middle School placed fourth.

Valparaiso High School took fourth place in the high school division, he said.

Bender said Thomas Jefferson's victory marks the 21st time the school has won the state title and the 24th national competition in which the school will participate.

"I'm very very proud of the students, all the coaches and the parent support," Bender said.

The Thomas Jefferson team with "take a little time off" before it begins preparing for the national tournament, he said.
