VALPARAISO | Tom Ridge, the first Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, will be the featured speaker next week at the Porter County Sheriff's Department's memorial service.

The department will hold its annual inspection and memorial service on Friday at the Sheriff’s Department, 2755 Ind. 49, Valparaiso. The inspection will start at 9:30 a.m., and the memorial service will start at 11 a.m.

Both are open to the public to attend.

This annual tradition during National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Week honors those men and women who died in the line of duty. Ridge will give the keynote address.

Ridge was elected to Congress in 1982 and was re-elected five times. He then served as the 43rd governor of Pennsylvania from 1995 to 2001.

Ridge was sworn in as the first Director of the Office of Homeland Security in October 2001, and in January 2003, he became the first Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
