VALPARAISO | A Valparaiso woman was arrested early Wednesday after police said she fired two rounds from a handgun in an attempt to get her boyfriend and his friends to leave her apartment.
Valparaiso police were called at 12:43 a.m. Wednesday to an apartment in the 1100 block of Oak Street. A woman and an 8-year-old son were in the residence.
Kimberly Garnett, 40, told police she had been in an argument with her live-in boyfriend, Donald Wilkes, 40.
Police said Garnett wanted Wilkes and his friends to leave the apartment, and when they refused, she fired two shots out a window attempting to scare them to leave the apartment. Wilkes and Garnett then began to fight, and Wilkes grabbed the handgun from her and beat her with the gun, police said. He then left the apartment.
Police found Wilkes in a nearby tavern.
Both were arrested.
Garnett was being held on charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, both felonies.
Wilkes is being held on charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon and domestic battery with a child present, also both felonies.
Police said Child Protective Services took custody of the child.
