VALPARAISO | A tip from a resident led to the arrests Monday of two men in connection with a rash of thefts from vehicles in the Flint Lake area north of Valparaiso last weekend.
Derek Brettin, 20, 606 Oak St., Valparaiso, and Christopher Klym, 19, 2304 Thomas Road, Valparaiso, were charged with theft.
More than a dozen residents woke up the morning of Sept. 30 to find their vehicles were entered and items missing.
Porter County police said at least 17 reports were taken from people who reported GPS units, phone chargers, other electronics, cash and jewelry among items taken. One person reported a laptop computer stolen. Vehicle registrations and an ignition key were taken. The thieves also took some cash and coins, and one vehicle owner reported a small oxygen tank missing.
Sgt. Larry LaFlower said many of the items were recovered. Detectives on Tuesday still were sorting through the items recovered from the suspects trying to match them to the victims.
Thieves targeted Robin Road, Whipporwill Road, Cardinal Lane, Oriole Road, Sumac Road, Ostedt Drive, Hill Road, Masters Road and Flint Lake Gateway.
LaFlower said detectives received a tip about the case, went to the suspects’ homes and questioned the men, who told police about their involvement.
