Porter Township voters on Tuesday will chose between two candidates seeking a seat on the Porter Township School Board.
Lilann Sgouros is running against Steven Julovich for an at large seat.
Sgouros retired from Boone Grove High School in 2011, where she taught drama for 24 years.
She said wants to make sure students come first in the district, saying that learning begins in the classroom. She noted that there has been a lack of trust between the teachers, school board and administrators, and hopes to bring those groups together.
“Running for a position is something I've always wanted to do, and I wanted to have a look at the other side of things ,” Sgouros said, who is endorsed by the Association of Porter Township Educators. “And I feel with my experience with being a teacher will bring a unique perspective to the school board.”
Julovich did not return calls for comment for this story, but said in his nwi.com online questionnaire that he will work honestly with tax payers, parents and the teachers association to maintain the environment that promotes academic achievement.
