CENTER TOWNSHIP | Homemade explosive devices were used early Sunday morning to damage or destroy five mailboxes in the Emerald Ridge and Heritage Valley subdivisions.
The Porter County sheriff's department said four of the mailboxes were damaged by devices made from plastic bottles filled with common household items and chemicals.
One of the mailboxes, in the 1600 block of Tippecanoe Court was damaged apparently by a mortar-style fireworks.
Police were first called about 2:45 a.m. Sunday with a report from a homeowner in the 3000 block of Arran Quay Terrace who reported hearing a loud explosion about 2:25 a.m. He told police check the area and found his mailbox was damaged and he found a plastic bottle that was still smoking in his mailbox.
A neighbor, who also heard the explosions, said he turned on a light and saw two teens running from the area.
Police also took reports from homeowners in the 2000 block of Carlisle Lane, 2400 block of Honelee Court and the 1700 block of Potato Creek Court.
Police said they found a bottle of a household chemical used to make the devices near the mailbox on Potato Creek Court.
No injuries were reported, but police have said the devices are potentially dangerous.
