VALPARAISO | The South Shore Civil War Memorial Trail will be hosting a ceremony on Monday honoring Valparaiso Civil War veteran Col. Isaac Suman.
The ceremony in which a new headstone will be placed at his grave begins at 11 a.m. and marks the 150-year anniversary of the Battle of Stones River in Murfreesboro, Tenn., where Suman survived gunshot wounds.
The ceremony will be at Maplewood Cemetery, Sturdy Road and Penna Hill Drive, just south of U.S. 30.
Suman commanded the 9th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War, and returned home to later become the mayor of Valparaiso.
During the ceremony, a Civil War artillery reenactment group will fire a cannon in Suman’s honor and historical preservation volunteers will drink a nonalcoholic toast at the gravesite. A new granite marker also will be placed at the foot of the colonel’s existing headstone honoring his war-time sacrifices.
