VALPARAISO | The Valparaiso Family YMCA has launched a new program for girls called Athena.

While having fun with friends, the girls exercise, learn about healthy food choices, building positive self-esteem and making good lifestyle decisions. The one-hour class includes 30 minutes of exercise and 30 minutes of class discussion.

“I love seeing the girls build confidence, open up and feel empowered, not just in group, but outside as well," class leader Danielle Gingrich said.

Grades three through five meet 4 to 5 p.m. Mondays and Fridays, and grades six through eight meet 4 to 5 Wednesdaysand 4:30 to 5:30 Fridays. The cost of the Athena program for both Y members and community is $70. Scholarships for this program are available. Registration is now open for the next session of Athena.

The next session begins today. Register online at or at the Y Courtesy Desk. Call Carrie Koch at (219) 462-4185, ext. 249.
