VALPARAISO | A 40-year-old man accused of fondling a 13-year-old girl reportedly told police he felt the girl's age was irrelevant.
Jeffrey Akins, of Valparaiso, is charged with two felony counts of child molestation, according to documents filed earlier this month in Porter Superior Court.
On June 11, Valparaiso police were called to Porter hospital where a woman said her daughter was the victim of a sexual assault while attending a sleepover at a friend's house.
The girl's friend told police she and the purported victim had been drinking and needed more alcohol, so they went to Akins' nearby apartment in the 1500 block of Vale Park Road for beer.
The friend said while they were in his apartment, Akins began kissing the girl while the two were on his couch.
She told police she went to get another neighbor to stop them and when she came back, she found the two of them in bed.
Detectives questioned Akins who reportedly said he "made out" with the girl and touched her atop her clothes before he took her into his bedroom. He said the encounter would have progressed from there had he not been stopped.
"They may have said how old she was, but it wouldn't have mattered." Akins reportedly told investigators.
