VALPARAISO | Police are warning residents about a new scam that was attempted on a local woman.

Valparaiso police said a woman in the 1000 block of Chicago Street reported receiving a telephone call from a man who told her she had won $2.5 million.

He then asked if she was home alone and informed her he would be at her home within 25 minutes with her winnings.

The caller then asked if she could come up with $250 for "insurance."

When the woman said she could not come up with $250, the man asked for $100 instead.

The woman told police the caller had her correct name and address.

Police responded to the home, but the man never arrived at the home.

Police said residents should be aware of this scam and not provide any information to an unknown caller and never inform someone you are home alone.
