CHICAGO | A Valparaiso-based aviation company was at the center of staged-plane crash Friday that was realistic enough to fool some, including members of the media.
Wings Aviation was hired to stage the crash on Martin Luther King Drive for the TV series "Chicago Fire," according to company Marketing Director Lisa Mathis.
While the company followed all the guidelines and emergency officials were aware the crash was a fake, some media sources were temporarily fooled, she said.
WGN's morning newscast spent several minutes trying to figure out the scene after being alerted to the site of a broken airplane in a road. The anchors were noticeably irriated when they learned it was not a real incident.
The single-engine plane crash will appear in Episode 12 of the current season of the show, Mathis said.
Company owner Brian Sheely spent the day at the shooting site, she said.
