VALPARAISO | Firefighters on Monday remained on the scene of a mulch fire near 910 Morthland Drive that was reported Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters were called at 2:50 p.m. to property used by Reed’s Nursery, adjacent to Amerigas on U.S. 30 on the city’s south side, said Battalion Chief Lester Abraham.
Crews found pallets and piles of mulch on fire. Off-duty personnel and neighboring fire departments were called in.
Abraham said the fire covered an area about 300 feet by 600 feet, and the piles of mulch were 50 feet high. He said an excavator was brought in to remove the piles.
Abraham said the fire likely started in the mulch piles, which generate high temperatures as the material decomposes. No one was injured.
Abraham said he expected firefighters to remain at the scene throughout Monday to continue dousing the fire.
