VALPARAISO | The Valparaiso Police Department is giving the public a chance to meet with officers Friday and share their concerns or questions over a cup of coffee.

The Coffee with a Cop events are planned for 7  to 9 a.m. at the Viking Chili Bowl at 105 U.S. 30 and from 10 a.m. to noon at Suzie's Cafe at 1050 Southpoint Drive.

"The goal is to build relationships in the community," said Valparaiso police Sgt. Michael Grennes.

The locations were chosen to provide an informal, neutral space to facilitate discussions, he said. The national program is in effect in 100 cities and towns in 24 states.

The Valparaiso Police Department also is hosting a training session Thursday about the program. Officers from various departments in Indiana, Illinois and Michigan are expected to attend.
