VALPARAISO | A 31-year-old local man is charged with raping an underage girl after providing her with alcohol.
Matthew Moore, of 3707 Central Ave. in Valparaiso, faces B felony counts of rape and sexual misconduct with a minor, and D felony sexual battery.
The girl, who was between the ages of 14 and 16 when the incident allegedly occurred Nov. 21 or 22, told investigators that after drinking an alcoholic beverage provided by Moore, one of the next things she remembered was waking up in bed with Moore on top of her.
She said Moore told her "you're so pretty" while raping her, but she was not strong enough to push him away, police said. She told police she tried to yell for her sister, but Moore told her to shut her mouth.
She awoke the next morning naked, with her clothes on the floor, police said.
When Moore was brought in by police for questioning and learned why he was there, he asked for an attorney and the discussion stopped. Police said Moore told them he has drinking problem and consumes two-fifths of Wild Turkey whiskey and 12 beers a day.
The girl's mother told police the girl did not reveal the rape until recently. The girl had such a hard time talking about the incident that she described it in writing for her mother, police said.
According to court documents, the mother told police Moore had been banned from the Franklin House bar in Valparaiso for selling and/or possessing the date rape drug Rohypnol.
The case has been assigned to Porter Superior Court Judge Roger Bradford and an initial video hearing is expected at 3 p.m. Thursday, according to the court.
