VALPARAISO | A nearly four-hour standoff ended just before 10 a.m. Tuesday, as a man holed up inside a business surrendered to police.

According to Valparaiso police, about 6:10 a.m., officers were called to a business in the 1200 block of Formula Drive, just east of Roosevelt Road, where a 40-year-old Valparaiso man was threatening to harm himself.

Officers arrived a minute later and reportedly saw the man inside the business with a handgun. Police were able to call the man and said he never threatened to harm anyone but himself.

Shortly before 10 a.m., the man was taken into custody by Porter County SWAT Team members and transported to Porter hospital for evaluation.

Police said criminal charges against the man are pending and their investigation is ongoing.

The standoff created a traffic headache for drivers who use Roosevelt Road to traverse between the city's north side and the downtown district, as traffic was closed to drivers between Evans Avenue and Elm Street.
