VALPARAISO | A 17-year-old Valparaiso resident was taken to the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center on Thursday night after police said he was found with items used in dealing marijuana.

Valparaiso police were called to an apartment building in the 2800 block of Cumberland Drive about 9:30 p.m. Thursday for a suspicious vehicle.

An officer approached the car and said as soon as the teenage driver opened the window, the officer smelled burnt marijuana.

The officer reported the boy said he was there to pick up a friend to go see a movie and denied having drugs in the car.

Police said he later told them he had marijuana in the center console, which officers opened and found a large bag with marijuana,  numerous smaller empty bags, a scale and $360 cash.

Officers said they found a multicolored glass smoking pipe and a grinder in the boy's backpack.

He was taken into custody and will face a magistrate for alleged marijuana dealing, possession of marijuana and paraphernalia and maintaining a common nuisance.
