MICHIGAN CITY | Shirley Heinze Land Trust will host a volunteer workday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Ambler Flatwoods Nature Preserve.
This is Shirley Heinze’s preserve. The 350-acre preserve has more than 5 miles of hiking trails and is home to more than 300 species of native plants.
On this workday, volunteers will be assembling a 28-foot, galvanized steel walk bridge across White Ditch on the northernmost parcel of the property. The assembly will consist of bolting together two 28-foot, prefabricated rails, with angle iron and securing the bridge to the support posts and installing a wooden deck.
This bridge will be a memorial for John Newgent, husband of life board member Myrna Newgent and longtime supporter of Shirley Heinze Land Trust. Bring cordless drill/driver, if you have one. Lunch will be provided. RSVP by calling the office at (219) 242-8558.
