GARY | Wildlife in the dunes might be slowing down this month in preparation of cold weather to come, but the staff at the Douglas Center at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is busy preparing fun programs for families and visitors of all ages.
On Saturday the Douglas Center’s open house will feature the return of wild turkeys to the dunes landscape. This program will be offered at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. and feature a short slide program followed by a puppet show.
Also beginning on Saturday, Ken Bult's photography class from Purdue University Calumet will display their dunes photos inside the center. The exhibit features over a dozen photographs taken for their class and will remain on display until January. The exhibit will get kicked off with an informal reception at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The Douglas Center will be closed on Thanksgiving Day but will open again on Friday to allow visitors to walk off those Thanksgiving Day calories on the Miller Woods Trail. Bring guests to the Douglas Center over the holidays to show off the neighborhood national park, enjoy the photo exhibit, and enjoy a cup of coffee or hot chocolate inside the center on Nov. 29 and 30.
Family Day at the Douglas Center affords visitors an opportunity to play with our changing, hands-on exhibits, make a free craft, or help feed the center’s resident reptiles and amphibians every Saturday. Free refreshments add to the open house atmosphere where the park introductory video can also be watched. The new nature play area just outside the center is open for unstructured play until 4 p.m.
The Douglas Center is located at 100 N. Lake Street in the Miller section of Gary.
