VALPARAISO | A local woman said she was on her way to work Saturday night when she was pulled over by what appears to have been a man imitating a police officer.
The woman said she was running late to work between 10:30 and 11 p.m. when she passed another vehicle on North Calumet Avenue in the area of the 49er Drive-In, according to police.
She then saw what appeared to be red and blue lights coming from the gray car she had just passed. She pulled over near County Road 700 North and a white man with short-cut, light-colored hair, and wearing a striped sweatshirt approached her and said, "I should take you straight to jail for reckless driving and speeding."
The woman said she was frightened and did not look up at the man, police said. She handed him her driver's license and he returned from his vehicle a short time later informing her he was going to give her a break.
The woman decided to contact police after realizing she did not see a uniform or any markings on the man's car. She also could not remember the man identifying his department.
County police contacted other departments in the area, including state police, and none had record of the traffic stop.
