VALPARAISO | A 53-year-old Wheatfield woman faces a felony neglect charge on allegations of leaving a baby and an older child with Down syndrome in a running car outside of Walmart.

Police took Elizabeth Hernandez into custody after another shopper noticed the children in the vehicle shortly before 10 p.m. Monday.

Hernandez is the mother of the 14-year-old with Down syndrome and grandmother of the baby, police said.

She reportedly told police on the way to jail that, "I'm not a bad mom. I just made a stupid decision. I thought it was safe to do something like that in Valparaiso."
