VALPARAISO | An Arizona woman faces a felony theft charge after being accused of taking a $2 cup of coffee from a 7-Eleven store Monday.

Police were called to the store shortly after 8 a.m.

An officer saw Natasha Darden, 42, in the 1400 block of East Lincolnway. She matched the description given by the owner, and was drinking from a disposable coffee cup.

According to police, Darden said she offered to pay 50 cents for a cup of hot water, but was told it would cost her $2.09. She told police she refused to pay that much for a cup of hot water, so she walked out with the cup and told the owner to call 911, which she did.

She told police she was from Arizona, but was walking to Texas to get her birth certificate.

Police had Darden remove the lid from the cup, which contained a "light coffee colored liquid" inside.

According to police, the store owner said Darden had been loitering around the coffee area, then filled the extra large cup with an "unknown liquid." She confirmed that Darden had offered to pay 50 cents for the contents of cup.
