VALPARAISO | A 65-year-old Valparaiso woman in a wheelchair fell six feet into a construction ditch Saturday along Vale Park Road.
Police were called about 12:50 p.m. to the area of 1303 Vale Park Road, near Soft Touch Car Wash.
According to police, a man walking along Vale Park Road looked down into the hole and saw what he thought was a large car. When he looked more closely he realized it was an upside-down wheelchair and there was a woman underneath it.
The passerby went to Soft Touch Car Wash and talked to an employee who called 911, then went down into the hole to check on the woman.
The employee told police he didn't want to move the woman, but he said he tried to lift some of the weight of the wheelchair off of her until emergency workers arrived.
He told police he held her hand and talked to her.
Police and firefighters found wheelchair tracks that led to the hole. Police said it appears the woman was traveling west on the sidewalk of Vale Park Road before falling into the hole.
Police said the woman did not remember falling into the hole. She suffered only scratches and bruises, police said. She was kept at Porter Regional Hospital over night as a precaution.
Police learned that the woman's eyesight has been deteriorating.
