VALPARAISO | A workshop on teen suicide and prevention is planned for next week.
The Family and Youth Services Bureau will present a Family Life Series Workshop titled “Youth Suicide — Prevention and Education.” It will held at 6:30 p.m. May 21 at the FYSB Valparaiso office at 253 W. Lincolnway.
The workshop will be led by Kelly Bishop Bohren, a social worker and home school adviser for Fegely Middle School in Portage. She also is a therapist in private practice.
Her 17 years of experience with young people includes therapy for inpatient and outpatient environments, direct service and program management with runaway and homeless youth in Oregon, family mediation for Juvenile Justice Diversion in Multnomah County, Ore., and program development and management for Youth Service Bureau of St. Joseph County.
Among the issues to be discussed will be developing an understanding of the problem of youth suicide; gaining understanding of risk factors that can lead to suicide; learning about the treatment and prevention of suicidal behavior in adolescents; increasing knowledge of warning signs of youth suicide; and educating adults to be better prepared to identify and seek help for young people who may be at risk.
The workshop is free and open to all community members.
Seating is limited. RSVP with name and contact information by May 20 to (219) 464-9585 or to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Additional Family Life Series Workshops that are scheduled for this year include Child Development on July 16; Navigating the Educational System on Sept. 17; and Understanding Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder on Nov. 19.
