VALPARAISO | An 18-year-old Valparaiso man was struck by a train Saturday morning on the Canadian National Railroad tracks near Yellowstone Road.
Nicholas Domer was taken to Porter hospital Valparaiso Campus then airlifted to a Chicago hospital.
His condition is not known.
Police were called at 11:26 a.m. Saturday to the area of Yellowstone Road near the Canadian National Railroad tracks to check on a man walking on the tracks while wearing headphones.
Officers found a stopped train with the conductor standing outside the train. Officers learned from the conductor a man had been walking westbound on the tracks and the train, also westbound, struck him.
Police learned through their investigation that Domer was wearing headphones while walking on the railroad tracks.
The train conductor told police he sounded the train’s horn several times trying to warn the man. When it became apparent the man was not going to get out of the way, the train conductor initiated an emergency stop.
