Valparaiso Family YMCA

Can-Do Kids

Classes are from 4:55 to 5:25 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. This class is for 3- to 11-year-olds and provides activities for children with special needs. The cost is $20.

Livestrong at the YMCA

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week program for adult cancer survivors and is offered free at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. It is open to Y members and the community. Program focus includes improving cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, balance, stress management and confidence.

Nutrition for Life

Nutrition for Life offers nutritional counseling in personal, family, and group settings led by AFPA Certified Nutrition and Wellness Consultants. Learn how to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle by counteracting your nutritional struggles. Weigh-ins, body measurements, and personalized plans are all included in counseling sessions.

Walk in the popcorn parade

Join the YMCA in the 2013 Popcorn Parade on Saturday. Get some exercise, see friends and represent the YMCA. Register at the Courtesy Desk or on the sign-up sheet in the Y Lobby by Friday. A New Program Just for Girls, Athena!

Have fun with friends, exercise and learn about healthy lifestyle choices. This one-hour class will include 30 minutes of exercise and 30 minutes of group discussion for seven weeks and starts the week of Sept. 9. Grades 3-5 will meet on Mondays and Fridays from 4 until 5 p.m. and grades 6-8 will meet on Wednesdays from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. and Fridays from 4:30 until 5:30 p.m. Cost is $70 for Y Members and $140 for Community.

Seminars open to community

Methodist Hospitals offers free seminars to the community at the YMCA. A diabetes awareness seminar begins at 5:30 p.m. today. A seminar on PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease) begins at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 12. Sign up sheets are in the lobby or call (888) 909-DOCS.

Style show

Save the date of Sept. 26 for a 50 Fit & Fabulous Style Show at Old Town Banquet Center.Cocktails and heavy hors d’oeuvres start at 6:30 p.m., followed by a fashion show at 8 and a cocktail reception at 9. This is a fun, fashion-filled event and a unique shopping experience! Tickets are $50 per person.

Portage YMCA

Open preschool registration

Preschool registration for fall is open to the public. Register early to receive a spot. Financial assistance scholarships are available to those who qualify.

Child care, development

There are openings in the child care rooms for 2-year-olds. Enroll a 2-year-old for the first three weeks, and the fourth week is free.

Free running club

The Free Community Running Club is for amateur runners. They meet at 6 p.m. every Tuesday in the YMCA lobby. Membership is not needed. Dress for the weather. All one-hour runs will be outside unless it is lightning or below 15 degrees. Participants will be running three to five miles with calisthenics and stretching. Must be 14 and up to participate. Fun Zone is only available to YMCA members.

Membership

Membership special for September is pay the day joiner fee. If you become a member on Sept. 3, the joiner fee is $3; Sept. 29, $29. This offer is available for all memberships.

Gymnastics

Jump off the beam, flip over the bars, follow your dreams, and reach for the stars. As part of the Y’s focus on Youth Development the Y offers gymnastic for ages 2 through their spectacular “Sparklers” gymnastics team. Gain confidence, strength, and balance and learn the importance of teamwork with Y gymnastics.

New group exercise classes

intense new Boot Camp, Cycling 2, Senior Cycling, and Senior Strength Training are offered.

Aquasize

Water classes are offered September and October at Portage High School West. Register at the Y front desk only; money will not be accepted at the pool. This is a low-impact program consisting of a warm up, workout and cool down. The workout will include aerobic activity along with strengthening exercises utilizing weights and pool noodles.

Youth basketball clinic

Youth basketball clinic is 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 18; 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 19 and 20; open to first through sixth graders. Fee is $14 Primary Plus, $20 Primary, $40 non-members

Indoor Soccer

Indoor soccer is Monday through Oct. 26 for ages 3 to 13. Practices one night a week with games on Saturdays.

Men's fall basketball league

Men's fall basketball league begins Sept. 29 and runs 2 to 5 p.m. every Sunday afternoon; adults 18 and over. Cost $350 per team if paid on or before Sept. 29; $400 if paid after Sept. 29.

Duneland Family YMCA

Emerald City Hustle 5K Run & Walk

The 2013 Emerald City Hustle 5K Run & Walk is scheduled for Sept. 14 to raise funds for the Duneland Family YMCA Fitness Department. This race is keeping the spirit of the Wizard of Oz alive in Chesterton by continuing its family friendly theme. Registration is being accepted online at thtiming.com or at the Duneland YMCA Member Service Desk. The cost is $20 with a shirt and $15 without a shirt. Registrations taken after Aug. 29 and on race day will be $25.

Before/After School Care Registration

Registration is now being accepted for the School Age Child Care Program. With a focus on safety, health, social growth and academic enhancement, Y after school programs serve kindergartners through 6th grade students with a variety of programmatic and activity options to explore and develop their interests and talents. Discounted rates are available for members. If you are not a member the Joiner's fee is being waived for School Age Child Care participants. Parents Night Out

Every Friday night from 6 to 9:30 p.m., parents can use the Parents Night Out program and stop worrying about finding a sitter. Trained YMCA staff have organized and fun activities planned to keep each child’s attention. From arts and crafts to gym time it is never a dull moment on Friday evenings at the Y. The cost for members is $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child. The nonmember rate is $20 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. Reservations must be made by Thursday of each week.

Senior Center

The Duneland Y Senior Center is open 10:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday and Wednesday through Friday. Bingo is held every Friday beginning at 11:45 a.m. The Senior Center is free of charge to the community with there being a nominal fee to attend field trips.

Fall Sports

Registration is still open for Youth Fall Soccer and Flag Football. The seasons run Saturday to Oct. 19. The cost is $40 for members and $80 for non-members. Visit the Member Service Desk to register.
