5K run/walk training program
Registration is open for the From the Couch to the Emerald City 5K training program designed for novice participants that will be held July 20 to Sept. 14. Participants will meet for weekly training sessions. The completion of the program is to run the Duneland Y’s Emerald City Hustle 5K on Sept. 14. The cost is $40 for members and $80 for residents. Parents Night Out
Every Friday night from 6 to 9:30 p.m., Parents can utilize the Parents Night Out program and stop worrying about finding a sitter. Trained YMCA staff have organized and fun activities planned to keep each child’s attention. From arts and crafts to gym time it is never a dull moment on Friday evenings at the Y. Not to mention, it is affordable! The cost for members is $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child. The nonmember rate is $20 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. Reservations must be made by Thursday of each week.
Summer camp registration is now open for students in the first through 12th grades. Kids will enjoy a summer full of nature, water fun, games, field trips (Dunes National Lakeshore, Railcats and Fair Oaks), crafts, and new friendships.
Swim lesson registration
Swim lesson registration is now open. Swimming is a valuable life skill for children at all ages. Every day, children learn the basics of swimming at the Y or enhance their skills with our progressive lessons that turn beginners into experts, polliwogs into sharks. And our kids are having fun, being healthy, learning safety and building confidence all at the same time! Session dates for children 6 month and up include July 8-19, July 22-Aug. 2, and Aug. 5-16. Mixed martial arts
Registration is now being accepted for Mixed Martial Arts Team YMCA. This program focuses on strength and endurance conditioning using stand up and ground sport combat techniques in the realm of traditional and mixed. Training for amateur or professional competition.
Free car seat fitting clinic
The Chesterton Fire Department is partnering with the Duneland Family YMCA and Porter Regional Hospital to offer a free car seat fitting clinic from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Duneland Family YMCA and from 7 to 8 a.m. June 27 at the Duneland Y child care facility located in Chesterton Middle School, entrance 8.
Community Wellness Nurse
Porter Regional Hospital will have a Community Wellness Nurse at the Duneland Family YMCA to offer a free blood pressure/blood sugar/body mass index screenings from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Friday

First Tee Golf

Y Full- and Half-Day preschool
Prepare children for kindergarten with the Creative Curriculum. The program includes swimming and fitness, walking field trips and the development of social skills and building healthy habits. Get ready for some golf on July 25 at the Valparaiso Country Club. This year marks the Valparaiso Family YMCA’s 23rd annual golf outing. Registration and lunch are at 11 a.m with a shotgun start at noon. The cost is $125 per golfer or $500 per team. Funds raised provide affordable sports programs for all kids to learn, grow and thrive.
11th annual Valpo Triathlon
Online registration is now open for the Valpo Triathlon which starts at 8 a.m. July 13. This race features a ¼-mile swim, a 12.4-mile bike ride, and a 3.2-mile run and is a sanctioned USA Triathlon event. Participants must register by July 10, with a limit of 500 participants (register by June 27 to receive a dry-release wicking shirt). Race fees are $72 for non-USAT members and $60 for USAT members. Classes are from 4:55 to 5:25 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. This class is for 3- to 11-year-olds and provides activities for children with special needs. The cost is $20 for both members and residents.
YMCA Summer Camp
Sign up for the whole summer or sign up on a weekly basis. Y Summer Camp is for kids ages 3-years-old to kids entering seventh grade.
2-week swim lessons
Take advantage of the Y’s two-week swim lessons. Instruction is available for kids 3 through 14-years-old and is offered Monday through Friday. Weeks available are: Monday through July 5 (no class on July 4th), July 8-19, July 22-Aug. 2, Aug. 5-16.
Challenger British soccer camp
Challenger Soccer will once again be visiting the Valparaiso Family YMCA for a weeklong soccer camp for ages 4-14. Mini sessions and half-day camps are available July 8 - July 12 at the Valparaiso Mennonite Church. See www.valpoymca.org for pricing times and registration information.

Preschool registration for fall is open to the public. Register early to receive a spot. Financial assistance scholarships are available to those who qualify.
Child care, development
There are openings in the child care rooms for 2-year-olds. Enroll a 2-year-old for the first three weeks, and the fourth week is free. Ask for a tour by calling Abbie Prasco at (219) 792-9622.
All full-time college students with schedule or current college ID will receive a single primary plus membership for $31 a month with no joiner fee. Membership must be purchased by July 31.
No Bummer Summer Camp
No Bummer Summer Camp continues from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Aug. 16. Before and after camp hours are also available for working parents from as early as 6:30 am to as late as 6 p.m. Free specialty clinics three days a week. Sports of all sorts, Swimmies, Crafty Corner and No Bake Chef.
Free community open swim
Free community open swim is the first Friday of the month at the Portage High School West Pool from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. throughout this month. Children must be accompanied by an adult 18 or over the entire time and must stay with child.
The Y's summer special is available: purchase four weeks for $40, six weeks for $60, eight weeks for $80, 10 weeks for $100 or 12 weeks for $120 with no joiner fee.
British Soccer Camp

Jump off the beam, flip over the bars, follow your dreams, and reach for the stars. As part of the Y’s focus on Youth Development the Y offers gymnastic for ages 2 through their spectacular Sparklers gymnastics team.
Registration is open through July 5. soccer is from July 15 to Aug. 31 at Real Life Community church, 3134 Swanson Road.
Free fitness in the park
The Y has partnered with Portage parks officials to offer free fun fitness classes at 10 a.m. every Saturday in July: zumba July 6 at Imagination Glen Park, Total tone July 13 at Gilbert Memorial Park, book camp July 20 at Woodland Park and Yoga on the beach on July 27 at Lakefront Park.
Free walk this way
The YMCA in conjunction with the city of Portage is now offering a walking club. This club will walk every Tuesday. This community club does not require a membership to the YMCA. Interested walkers/runners can meet in the YMCA lobby at 9:45 am. The Rails to Trails will be utilized for this program. During inclement weather, the YMCA track will be used. Membership not needed.
Free Running Club
Free Community Running Club is for amateur runners who will meet in the YMCA lobby every Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. Membership not needed. Dress for the weather. All one-hour runs will be outside unless it is lightning or below 15 degrees. Participants will be running 3-5 miles with calisthenics and stretching. Must be 14 and up to participate. Fun Zone is only available to YMCA members.
Thursday night volleyball free for Y-members 14 and older from 7-9 pm. Nonmembers pay only $10. Advanced Court and recreational court available. Parent or guardian must sign in participant.
