Preschool registration

Registration for 2014-15 Preschool Academy has begun. Be sure to hold your spot, as openings are limited. Call for classes and times.

Pee Wee Prom

This Daddy/Daughter and Mommy/Son event is from 6 to 8 p.m. March 7 with a "Wizard of Oz" magical evening theme. There will be finger foods and beverages. Dress up or wear semicasual attire. The cost is $15 per couple and $7 for each additional person before March 3; after, $20 a couple.

Indoor Ironman

Gear up for the new year and participate in a fun and challenging six-week Indoor Ironman, which begins Monday. This individual simulated triathlon encourages participants to cross-train over a six-week period. Swim a total of 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.3 miles. Ages 14 and up.

Youth floor hockey

Kids, ages 6 to 13, can participate in youth floor hockey. Begin with a four-day clinic, followed by the league. Clinic runs from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Feb. 24 to 27. League begins March 3.

Swim, gymnastics lessons

Sign up to learn new skills, meet new friends and have fun this winter. Progressive swim lessons for all ages. Progress gymnastics lessons begin at age 3. See website for schedules.

Open sports competition

All levels of players are welcome. Dodgeball, age 10 and up, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays; mens basketball Wednesdays; and volleyball, 7 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays.

Teen fitness class

A four-week Teen Fitness Class for kids ages 12 to 14 is offered. Class participants learn how to properly use the equipment in the Portage Y’s cardio and cybex machine rooms, basic anatomy and physiology, proper stretching techniques, nutrition guidelines and more. Graduates of the class will then be allowed to use the YMCA equipment on their own. Classes begin at the start of each month, so check the website for class info today. All members must be at least 14 years of age or be at least 12 years old and have passed the YMCA Teen Fitness Class to use the YMCA equipment.

Mens adult basketball league

This league begins Sunday and runs from 2 to 5 p.m. every Sunday, ages 18 and over. Register at the Y Welcome Center.

Duneland Family YMCA

Parents Night Out

Parents can use the Parents Night Out program and stop worrying about finding a sitter, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. every Friday. Trained YMCA staff have organized and fun activities planned to keep each child’s attention. The cost for members is $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child. The nonmember rate is $20 for the first child and $10 for each additional child.

Youth Indoor Soccer League

Registration is open. Program open to boys and girls ages 3 to 8. Orientation and the first practice are at 10 a.m. March 1 in the YMCA gym. The indoor soccer season runs through April 12 and consists of one weekly game and one weekly one-hour practice. The cost is $40 for members; $80 for nonmembers. Multiple child discounts and financial assistance are available.

Free ACT, SAT practice test

Fully proctored practice tests will show students what to expect in a test-like environment. Students will receive comprehensive analysis of their performance on practice test detailing individual strengths and weaknesses. ACT practice test is from noon to 5 p.m. March 9; SAT practice test is noon to 5 p.m. April 13. Students should bring two pencils and a calculator. You must register. Kids fitness program

A new Play Strong Live Strong for kids ages 8 to 12 will be held in the fitness room. Have fun and keep moving with motivating games and activities played to upbeat music. Use all your major muscle groups. Parents welcome. Kids must be escorted to and from class. New Danz Party for Kids ages 8 to 12 starts at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the fitness room.

February FUN Raiser & Raffle

A fun raiser and raffle is being held now through Feb. 17. Silent auction items donated by: Anton Insurance, attorney Michael D. Raffle items donated by: Broadway Liquors, Car Quest, Gaston's Towing and Auto Repair and Pat's Liquors. Place a bid or purchase a raffle ticket. All proceeds benefit the Duneland Family YMCA Family Assistance Fund. Winners will be notified on Feb. 19.

Duneland Y presents Hollywood: "Be the Star YOU Already Are"

This is an exclusive engagement for fathers/significant men and their daughters, ages 12 and under. Limited showing: 6 to 8 p.m. March 8 at the Duneland Y Gym. Tickets are $20 per couple and $7 for each additional girl. Musical Score by EZ Tymes. Refreshments, snacks and desserts provided.


For girls in grades 3-5 - Promotes self-esteem and leadership. Girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique. The purpose is to promote positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore beliefs around experiences and challenges all girls face and develop skills and strategies to help navigate through them through fitness and friendship. Each girl will be entitled to a woman mentor to provide a positive experience. At the end of the course, the girls will participate in a community project and a big fitness event. Program runs March 9 - June 8 and meets each Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the Duneland Y.

Give Kids A Smile Day - HealthLinc is offering free oral exams, dental cleaning, flouride treatment sealants for qualifying individuals age 18 or younger on Monday, February 17 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at HealthLinc, 1001 Sturdy Road, Valparaiso. YMCA Night at a Pacers Game

The Indiana Pacers have invited YMCA members, staff, volunteers and supporters along with their friends and family to attend the Indiana Pacers game as they take on Josh Smith and the Pistons. A total of 20 lucky individuals who buy tickets for this game will be chosen to participate in the Halftime High-Five Tunnel Club. Health screenings

The community wellness nurse will conduct bone density screenings from 8 to 11 a.m. Friday in the senior center.

Ringing in Spring race

Ringing in Spring is April 5. Organized by longtime local runners and the Valparaiso Family YMCA, the Ringing in Spring 5K and 10K race is a Gold Cup, CARA Green Certified Race, has disposable chip timing, moisture wicking shirts, personalized race bibs, free child care and gear check. Family health fair

Join the Valparaiso Family YMCA and Methodist Hospital from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 23 for a family health fair. Get valuable information about your family's health, check out some classes and watch healthy cooking demonstrations. Meet Staley Da Bear, the official Chicago Bears mascot, and hang out with the Gary SouthShore RailCats mascots, Rusty and Rascal. This free event is open to everyone and will feature health screenings, classes and demonstrations, physician seminars, healthy cooking demonstrations, cholesterol and glucose screenings, prize giveaways and more. Second InSWIMniac event

The Valparaiso Family YMCA will be hosting its second annual 24-Hour InSWIMniac event March 15 to 16. You can either participate as an individual or you can make a team of up to 10 people. Teams and individuals will swim laps from noon to noon around a custom course in the lap pool. Valpo Skates

Valpo Skates is at 605 Campbell St. in Valparaiso in the Ben Franklin Middle School gym annex. Kindergartners through sixth-graders can skate from 6 to 9 p.m. Fridays. Family Skate is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays (all ages). The cost is $6 per skater.


LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week program for adult cancer survivors and is offered free at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. It is open to Y members and residents. Program focus includes improving cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, balance, stress management and confidence.
