Dancing Like The Stars
A host of local celebrities will vie for top dancing honors to help raise money for the Duneland YMCA Strong Kids Campaign at 6 p.m. Nov. 9. Proceeds from the event will be distributed to qualifying Duneland families in the form of scholarships for programs such as preschool, school aged childcare, sports, memberships and social groups. School Age Child Care
This child care provides a safe, structured environment for after school care from kindergarten through sixth grade. Located in all Duneland elementary schools from dismissal time to 6 p.m. Early morning care also available from 6 to 7:45 a.m.
Luna Mixed Martial Arts is starting a new season at Duneland YMCA on Tuesday. Classes will meet at 6 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday. Be part of a team and get fit, strong and confident practicing MMA. This class will now offer a ranking system. Participants will be able to learn and practice self defense techniques, boxing and kickboxing, Jiu-jitsu, Kung Fu, Muay Thai and grappling. Cost for the course is $60 per month. For those who register before the start date will receive half off the first months' fee. Participants will also receive a free team T-shirt while supplies last.
Parent's Night Out
Parents can use the Parent’s Night Out program and stop worrying about finding a sitter, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. every Friday. Trained YMCA staff have organized and fun activities planned to keep each child’s attention. The cost for members is $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child. The nonmember rate is $20 for the first child & $10 for each additional child.
Fitness - Yoga - classes
Fitness classes offered at 6 p.m. with instructor Mary Dacy in the Fitness Room. Insanity Workout - choreographed high intensity interval training program to build muscle while stripping away fat. Classes on Monday and Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. Pilates Bender Method - the Bender method is sculpts the body without risk of over-use injuries. Classes each Tuesday and Thursday at 8 a.m.
The community wellness nurse will offer free blood sugar, blood pressure and body mass index screenings from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Friday in the Senior Center at the Y.

This year, the Porter County Community Foundation, in partnership with The Times Media Company, brings back GIVE Day on Thursday. GIVE Day 2013 will benefit kids and the Valparaiso Family YMCA has been chosen to participate. During the 24 hours of GIVE Day, gifts to participating organizations will receive matching funds. On GIVE Day, please consider a gift, which will be matched. You can give online at portercountygiveday.org or in person at The Times, 1111 Glendale Boulevard in Valparaiso. The Valparaiso Family YMCA will also have computers set up in the Y Lobby for online voting on Nov. 7.
Parkinson Disease Seminar
Learn about the latest life-changing tools now available for those with Parkinson’s disease at this free seminar at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 20. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week program for adult cancer survivors and is offered free at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. It is open to Y members and the community. Program focus includes improving cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, balance, stress management and confidence. Classes are from 4:55 to 5:25 p[.m. and 5:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. This class is for 3- to 11- year-olds and provides activities for children with special needs. The cost is $20 for both members and community.

Free running club
The Free Community Running Club is for amateur runners. They meet at 6 p.m. every Tuesday in the YMCA lobby. Membership is not needed. Dress for the weather. All one-hour runs will be outside unless it is lightning or below 15 degrees. Participants will be running three to five miles with calisthenics and stretching. Must be 14 and up to participate. Fun Zone is only available to YMCA members.
Turkey Trot planned for Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 28. Run to compete in the 4 Mile Run, or run, jog or walk for fun in the 5K Fun Run, includes a 1K fun run for the kids. Open to all ages in the community. 1K begins at 7:15 a.m.; 4 Mile Run begins at 7:30; 5K Fun Run begins at 7:35. Walk-in registration the day of event begins at 6:30. Must register before Nov. 8 to receive an event shirt. Shirts will be available for $10 while supplies last. Register at www.thtiming.com or at the Y Welcome Center. Child Care and Development Center (full time child care) has openings for 2-, 3- and 4-year olds in the State Licensed Child Care Center. After the first three weeks, receive the fourth week free.
Play volleyball from 7 to 9 p.m. every Thursday. Free to Y members, $10 for others.
With a focus on youth development, the Portage Township YMCA has been chosen to be a recipient of Give Day on Thursday, November 7, 2013. Online donations will be submitted at www.PorterCountyGiveDay.org. Checks must be dated Nov. 7 and can be taken to The Times or to the YMCA. This Give Day will benefit nonprofit organizations that serve children. You choose the nonprofit organizations that will benefit from your gift and the gift will be matched on a prorated basis. This means that the percentage in which the Porter County Community Foundation will match donations will depend upon the total match pool amount (currently at $75,000) as well as the total of donations raised during the event.
