Y full- and half-day preschool
Prepare children for kindergarten with Creative Curriculum. The program includes swimming and fitness, walking field trips and development of social skills and building healthy habits. Classes are from 4:55 to 5:25 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. This class is for 3- to 11-year-olds and provides activities for children with special needs. The cost is $20.
Livestrong at the YMCA
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week program for adult cancer survivors and is offered free at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. It is open to Y members and the community. Program focus includes improving cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, balance, stress management and confidence.
Nutrition for Life
Nutrition for Life offers nutritional counseling in personal, family, and group settings led by AFPA Certified Nutrition and Wellness Consultants. Learn how to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle by counteracting your nutritional struggles. Weigh-ins, body measurements, and personalized plans are all included in counseling sessions.
Annual maintenance shutdown
The Y will be closed for the annual maintenance shutdown Saturday through Aug. 25. The Y will resume normal hours at 5 p.m. Aug. 26.
Walk in the popcorn parade
Join the YMCA in the 2013 Popcorn Parade on Sept. 7. Get some exercise, see friends and represent the YMCA. Register at the Courtesy Desk or on the sign-up sheet in the Y Lobby by Friday. A New Program Just for Girls, Athena!
Have fun with friends, exercise and learn about healthy lifestyle choices. This one-hour class will include 30 minutes of exercise and 30 minutes of group discussion for seven weeks and starts the week of Sept. 9. Grades 3-5 will meet on Mondays and Fridays from 4 until 5 p.m. and grades 6-8 will meet on Wednesdays from 4 p.m. until 5 p.m. and Fridays from 4:30 until 5:30 p.m. Cost is $70 for Y Members and $140 for Community.
Air it Out Flag Football
Register now through Aug. 30 for fall flag football league. This league will feature a 5 vs. 5 format, specifically designed to put players in open space and reduce contact opportunities. Rules and regulations will protect players from unnecessary hits in an effort to reduce injuries. Season runs from Sept. 9 until Oct. 26 and teams will practice twice a week. Practice dates and times will be determined by volunteer coach availability. Cost is $26 for Members and $52 for Community.
50 Fit & Fabulous Style Show
Save the date for a fabulous event for a wonderful cause, the Annual Community Assistance Campaign. Please join us at the Old Town Banquet Center for a style show, friends, food, fun, shopping and more. Cocktails & heavy hors d’oeuvres start at 6:30, followed by a fabulous fashion show at 8 p.m. and a cocktail reception at 9 p.m. This is a fun, fashion-filled event and a unique shopping experience. Open preschool registration
Preschool registration for fall is open to the public. Register early to receive a spot. Financial assistance scholarships are available to those who qualify.
Child care, development
There are openings in the child care rooms for 2-year-olds. Enroll a 2-year-old for the first three weeks, and the fourth week is free.
Free running club
The Free Community Running Club is for amateur runners. They meet at 6 p.m. every Tuesday in the YMCA lobby. Membership is not needed. Dress for the weather. All one-hour runs will be outside unless it is lightning or below 15 degrees. Participants will be running three to five miles with calisthenics and stretching. Must be 14 and up to participate. Fun Zone is only available to YMCA members.
Thursday night volleyball is free for Y members 14 and older from 7 to 9 p.m. Nonmembers pay $10. Advanced court and recreational court available. Parent or guardian must sign in participant.

Emerald City Hustle 5K Run & Walk
The 2013 Emerald City Hustle 5K Run & Walk is scheduled for Sept. 14 to raise funds for the Duneland Family YMCA Fitness Department. This race is keeping the spirit of the Wizard of Oz alive in Chesterton by continuing its family friendly theme. Registration is being accepted online at thtiming.com or at the Duneland YMCA Member Service Desk. The cost is $20 with a shirt and $15 without a shirt. Registrations taken after Aug. 29 and on race day will be $25.
Before/After School Care Registration
Registration is now being accepted for the School Age Child Care Program. With a focus on safety, health, social growth and academic enhancement, Y after school programs serve kindergartners through 6th grade students with a variety of programmatic and activity options to explore and develop their interests and talents. Discounted rates are available for members. If you are not a member the Joiner's fee is being waived for School Age Child Care participants. Community Wellness Nurse
A Porter Regional Hospital Community Wellness Nurse will be at the Duneland YMCA to administer free Blood Pressure/Blood Sugar/Body Mass Index screenings from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Friday and Aug. 28.
Parents Night Out
Every Friday night from 6 to 9:30 p.m., parents can use the Parents Night Out program and stop worrying about finding a sitter. Trained YMCA staff have organized and fun activities planned to keep each child’s attention. From arts and crafts to gym time it is never a dull moment on Friday evenings at the Y. The cost for members is $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child. The nonmember rate is $20 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. Reservations must be made by Thursday of each week.
