5K run/walk training program
Registration open for the From the Couch to the Emerald City 5K training program designed for novice participants. Training will be weekly from Saturday until Sept. 14. At completion of the program, participants run in the Duneland Y’s Emerald City Hustle 5K on Sept. 14. The cost is $40 for members and $80 for nonmembers. To register, call (219) 926-4204.
Parents Night Out
Every Friday night from 6 to 9:30 p.m., parents can use the Parents Night Out program and stop worrying about finding a sitter. Trained YMCA staff have organized and fun activities planned to keep each child’s attention. From arts and crafts to gym time it is never a dull moment on Friday evenings at the Y. The cost for members is $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child. The nonmember rate is $20 for the first child and $10 for each additional child. Reservations must be made by Thursday of each week.
Summer camp is open for students in the first through 12th grades. Kids will enjoy a summer full of nature, water fun, games, field trips (Dunes National Lakeshore, RailCats and Fair Oaks), crafts and new friendships.
Swim lesson registration
Swim lesson registration is now open. Swimming is a valuable life skill for children at all ages. Every day, children learn the basics of swimming at the Y or enhance their skills with progressive lessons that turn beginners into experts, polliwogs into sharks. A Porter Regional Hospital Wellness nurse will provide a free bone density screening from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 7.

Y full- and half-day preschool
Prepare children for kindergarten with Creative Curriculum. The program includes swimming and fitness, walking field trips and development of social skills and building healthy habits. Classes are from 4:55 to 5:25 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. This class is for 3- to 11-year-olds and provides activities for children with special needs. The cost is $20.
2-week swim lessons
Take advantage of the Y’s two-week swim lessons. Instruction is available for kids 3 through 14 years old and is offered Monday through Friday. Weeks available: Monday-Aug. 2, Aug. 5-16.
Obstacle course fundraiser
Children ages 4 to 10 are invited to participate in a fun obstacle course fundraiser on Aug. 3 at the Neal Hannon Farm at 307 S. County Road 100 West in Valparaiso. Registration in now open and is available at the Y Courtesy Desk prior to Aug. 3, for $20. Race-day registration is $25 at the event. The race begins at 11 a.m. Goody bags and refreshments will be given to all race participants. All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics.
YMCA Summer Camp
Sign up for the whole summer or sign up on a weekly basis. Y Summer Camp is for kids ages 3-years-old to kids entering seventh grade. Upcoming field trips include Zao Island and the Dunes.
Hummel Basketball Camp
Former Valparaiso High School and Purdue basketball standout and current NBA Minnesota Timberwolves player, Robbie Hummel is back in Valpo for a free, one-day camp. The Robbie Hummel Basketball Camp will be on Aug. 10 at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. The camp will provide individual instruction on shooting, ball handling, passing, defense and team concepts. Boys and girls of all skill levels are welcome. The camp will feature two sessions. Grades one through five will meet from noon until 2 p.m. and grades six to 10 will meet from 3 until 5 p.m. at the Valparaiso Family YMCA gym. Each session will be limited to 96.
Varicose vein seminar
Learn about minimally-invasive Venefit Targeted Endovenous Therapy that relieves the pain, swelling and leg heaviness associated with varicose veins. See how most patients resume normal activities within one to two days with minimal or no scarring or bruising at this free seminar. This is presented by Dr. Kais Yehyawi, a cardiologist. The Seminar will be at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 1 in the Y Community Room. Seating is limited.

Healthy eating seminar
A seminar on healthy eating will be held at 5:15 p.m. July 30 in front of the community garden. A registered dietician will address nutrition issues and answer questions.
Open preschool registration
Preschool registration for fall is open to the public. Register early to receive a spot. Financial assistance scholarships are available to those who qualify.
Child care, development
There are openings in the child care rooms for 2-year-olds. Enroll a 2-year-old for the first three weeks, and the fourth week is free. Ask for a tour by calling Abbie Prasco at (219) 792-9622.
All full-time college students with schedule or current college ID will receive a single primary plus membership for $31 a month with no joiner fee. Membership must be purchased by July 31.
The Y's summer special is available: purchase four weeks for $40, six weeks for $60, eight weeks for $80, 10 weeks for $100 or 12 weeks for $120 with no joiner fee. Register by July 31.
Free fitness in park
The Y has partnered with Portage parks to offer free fun fitness classes at 10 a.m. every Saturday this month: book camp is Saturday at Woodland Park and yoga on the beach, July 27 at Lakefront Park.
Free walk this way
The YMCA in conjunction with the city of Portage is now offering a walking club. This club will walk every Tuesday. It does not require a membership to the YMCA. Interested walkers/runners can meet in the YMCA lobby at 9:45 a.m. The Rails to Trails will be used for this program. During inclement weather, the YMCA track will be used. Membership not needed.
Free running club
The Free Community Running Club is for amateur runners. They meet at 6 p.m. every Tuesday in the YMCA lobby. Membership is not needed. Dress for the weather. All one-hour runs will be outside unless it is lightning or below 15 degrees. Participants will be running three to five miles with calisthenics and stretching. Must be 14 and up to participate. Fun Zone is only available to YMCA members.
Thursday night volleyball is free for Y members 14 and older from 7 to 9 p.m. Nonmembers pay $10. Advanced court and recreational court available. Parent or guardian must sign in participant.
