Valparaiso Family YMCA

Golf outing

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a 12-week program for adult cancer survivors and is offered free at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. It is open to Y members and residents. Program focus includes improving cardiovascular endurance, muscle strength, flexibility, balance, stress management and confidence. Summer camp

Summer camp registration is now open. Camp is structured by a daily schedule which provides focused activities developed from weekly themes. Camp activities will be held outdoors on YMCA grounds in our pavilion. The YMCA facility includes a playground, youth wellness room, swimming pool and gym. Green Thumb Project

Give Day

May 6 is Give Day, a 24-hour period for online philanthropy sponsored by the Porter County Community Foundation. Matching funds are available to help your dollars go further. Please consider a gift online or stop by the Y Giving Station on May 6.

Mother’s Day Plant Sale

The annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale supports the annual campaign which allows our door to open to community members who may not have the means to pay the full membership costs. Preorder beautiful roses and hydrangeas by Friday. Find an order form at www.valpoymca.org or at our Courtesy Desk. Plant pick up is on May 9 and 10.

Valparaiso, Chile Relief Fund

Our city and Valparaiso University along with the YMCA have established a relief fund to support victims of the recent forest fires in our sister city Valparaiso, Chile. More than 2,000 homes have been lost and the YMCA is providing shelter for 60 families, and serving 250 meals each day. Consider a donation on the link from our website. Swim, gymnastics lessons

Sign up to learn new skills, meet new friends and have fun this winter. Progressive swim lessons for all ages. Progress gymnastics lessons begin at age 3. See website for schedules.

Preschool registration

Registration for 2014-15 Preschool Academy has begun. Be sure to hold your spot, as openings are limited. Call for classes and times.

Outdoor T-ball/Baseball League

The Outdoor T-ball/Baseball League will be from May 5 to June 21 at Real Life Community Church in Portage. Weekday practices with games played on Saturday mornings. Registration ends Saturday.

Duneland Family YMCA

Parents Night Out

Parents can use the Parents Night Out program and stop worrying about finding a sitter, from 6 to 9:30 p.m. every Friday. Trained YMCA staff have fun activities planned to keep each child’s attention. The cost for members is $10 for the first child and $5 for each additional child. The nonmember rate is $20 for the first child and $10 for each additional child.

Zumbathon fundraiser

There will be a Zumbathon fundraiser from 6 to 8 p.m. May 16. Help raise money for the Y Fitness Department. All proceeds will be used to purchase a new metal rack full of hand weights for classes and workouts. The cost is $10 per person at the door, and additional donations during the event will be appreciated. Receive a free water bottle if you bring a guest. Door prizes.

Skills camp

T-ball coach pitch preseason skills camp registration begins Monday for ages 3 to 7. Preseason skills camp runs for four Saturdays starting on June 7. The cost per player is $25. The T-Ball/Coach Pitch season runs from July 12 to Aug. 23. The cost is $40 per child for members and $80 per child for nonmembers.

New BAT class

This class focuses on toning the Butt, Abs and Thighs and meets at 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

Tae kwon do classes

Learn how to defend yourself while learning how to use your mind and body in a way that requires self discipline, self-motivation and respect for others. Become a true martial artist. Class schedule: Traditional Forms at 5 p.m. on Tuesdays; JKD Defense / Sparring at 5 p.m. on Thursdays and Board Breaking & Weapons at 11 a.m. Saturdays. The single student cost is $75/month; family rate for two or more — $150/month. Fee includes first uniform and all material except sparring gear.
