Portage YMCA

Preschool registration

Preschool registration for fall is open for current students and siblings. Registration will be open to the public. Register early to receive a spot. Financial assistance scholarships are available to those who qualify.

Child care, development

There are openings in the child care rooms for 2-year-olds. Ask for a tour by calling Abbie Prasco at (219) 792-9622.

Sport physicals

Register a child for his/her sport physical with employed physicians & nurse practitioners of St. Mary Medical Center. Cost is $20. Physicals will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday and June 8. Registration required. Call (219) 764-7217.


Registration is open for ages 3-8. Weekday practices with games played on Saturday mornings. All practices and games will be held at Real Life Community Church in Portage. League runs from Monday through June 29.

Bound to Blossom

5K Run/Walk Fun Run begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Enjoy a spring morning in the outdoors with others who enjoy group running/walking. Register today. Early registration ends Wednesday in order to guarantee a shirt. Walk-in registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

Mother’s Day Massage Special

College special

Beginning May 13, all full-time college students with schedule or current college ID will receive a single primary plus membership for $31 a month with no joiner fee. Membership must be purchased by July 31.

College Fair

The Portage Township YMCA will be hosting a college fair from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday. The fair is free and open to the public. The fair will allow interested applicants to learn about Admission Requirements, Financial Aid, College Majors, College Entrance Exam Testing (ACT/SAT) and Life on Campus. Meet the representatives from Indiana Wesleyan University, Indiana University Northwest, Indiana Tech, Ivy Tech Community College, DeVry University, Trine University, Valparaiso University, Calumet College of St. Joseph

No Bummer Summer Camp

No Bummer Summer Camp is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 10 to Aug. 16. Before and after camp hours are also available for working parents from as early as 6:30 am to as late as 6 p.m.. Free specialty clinics 3 days a week. Sports of all sorts, Swimmies, Crafty Corner and No Bake Chef.

Golf League

Improve your swing, improve your life! Register NOW for the adult golf league running May 2 thru Aug 22 at Robbinhurst golf club. League will be on Thursday afternoons, Tee Time-TBA. $20 Registration/league fee. Additional fees per week-$15 to walk and $20 to ride.


Low-impact class at the Portage High School West Pool. Please register at the YMCA. Money will not be accepted at the pool. The class will run from May 6 to May 29, from 6:15 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

Free Community Open Swim

Free community open swim is the first Friday of the month at the Portage High School West Pool from 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. for the month of May and June. Children must be accompanied by an adult 18 or over the entire time and must stay with child.


Duneland Family YMCA

Family Fun Fitness

Beginning Wednesday, Family Fun Fitness will be offered for parents and their children 6-12 years old each week on Monday and Wednesday at 4:45 PM. This fitness class gives parents and children a chance to exercise together while taking part in numerous physical activities: hula-hoop, Zumba, Mixed Martial Arts, and games. This class is complimentary with a membership and taught by fitness professionals. Non-members can purchase a daily pass to participate.

Parent's Night Out

Every Friday night from 6 to 9:30 p.m., Parents can utilize the Parent’s Night Out program and stop worrying about finding a sitter. Trained YMCA staff have organized and fun activities planned to keep each child’s attention. From arts and crafts to gym time it is never a dull moment on Friday evenings at the Y. Not to mention, it is affordable! The cost for members is $10 for the first child & $5 for each additional child. The non-member rate is $20 for the first child & $10 for each additional child. Reservations must be made by Thursday of each week.

Y Middle

On Friday evenings, youth in the 6th-8th grade are invited to hang out at the Y from 6 to 9 p.m. There is no cost for members and $3 for others. Whether they want to play a game of pick up dodge ball, dance, or just have a place to talk with your friends the Y is at the disposal of those who attend. Teens can have fun without their parents around; however, parents can have ease of mind knowing their child is in safe hands.

Summer Camp 

Summer Camp registration is now open for students in the first through 12th grades. Kids will enjoy a summer full of nature, water fun, games, field trips (Dunes National Lakeshore, Railcats, & Fair Oaks), crafts, and new friendships.

Swim Lesson Registration

Swim Lesson Registration is now open. Swimming is a valuable life skill for children at all ages. Every day, children learn the basics of swimming at the Y or enhance their skills with our progressive lessons that turn beginners into experts, polliwogs into sharks. And our kids are having fun, being healthy, learning safety and building confidence all at the same time! Session dates for children 6 month and up include June 17-28, July 8-19, July 22-August 2, and August 5-16. Call (219) 926-4204 for pricing information.

T-Ball registration

T-ball registration is now open for children ages 3-7 years. The season will be held July 13 to Aug. 24. The cost is $40 members/$80 non-members. Register at the Member Service Desk or call (219) 926-4204 for more information. Financial assistance and multiple child discounts are available.

Senior Center Activities

There will be a Body Wrap Demo/Party with a handmade jewelry display at 11:45 a.m. May 13. The senior center is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday - Friday and is free and open to the public.

Health & Wellness Seminars

Methodist Hospitals and the Valparaiso Family YMCA will present a seminar on summer sports safety. Learn about the risks, prevention and treatment of common summer sports injuries. The seminar is at 10 a.m. Saturday, presented by Dr. Hiren Italia.

Flower and plant sale

Get ready for summer with the flower and plant sale. Stop by the Y Community Room from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 9, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 10 and 9 a.m. to noon May 11. All plants are $15 and come in 19 cm pots and are ready to plant. Order forms available at courtesy desk.

Stand Up Paddle

Paul Sommer will share information on this water sport from noon to 1 p.m. and 1 to 2 p.m. May 18. Members and community welcome. This event is free.

First Tee Golf

Youth learn about the game of golf and life lessons. Program is designed for 7 to 14-year-olds. Session runs from July 15-19 from noon until 2 p.m. Cost is $95 for Y members and $110 for community. Please see the Y Courtesy Desk to register.

Pilates mat work

Core strengthening exercises with a focus on flexibility and posture class meets from 8:05 to 8:50 a.m. Mondays through Fridays; 6:30 to 7:20 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10 to 11 a.m. Fridays. All classes are in Studio C.

Pilates personal training

Y Full and Half-Day preschool

YMCA Summer Camp sign-up

This year’s camp runs June 10 to Aug. 16 and includes great field trips, swimming, arts and crafts, sports and games, cooking, movie days and more. Golf outing

Get ready for some golf on July 25 at the Valparaiso Country Club. This year marks the Valparaiso Family YMCA’s 23rd annual golf outing. Registration and lunch is at 11 a.m with a shotgun start at noon. The cost is $125 per golfer or $500 per team. Funds raised provide affordable sports programs for all kids to learn, grow and thrive.

11th annual Valpo Triathlon

Online registration is now open for the Valpo Triathlon which will take place at 8 a.m. July 13. This race features a ¼-mile swim, a 12.4-mile bike ride, and a 3.2-mile run and is a sanctioned USA Triathlon event. Participants must register by July 10, with a limit of 500 participants (register by June 27 to receive a dry-release wicking shirt). Race fees are $72 for non-USAT members and $60 for USAT members. A spin-a-thon is planned for 8 to 11 a.m. May 18. Spin individually or as a team. The individual with the most pledges wins the grand prize. Register at the Y’s Wellness Desk. All proceeds from this event will help support the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Program.
